WELCOME TO NIPPERS

our prograM

Nippers was established at the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club in 1967. With over 50 years experience we have grown to be the largest nippers program in Queensland. The program runs at Noosa Heads Main Beach.

The nipper program is designed to introduce children aged 5 to 13 to Surf Lifesaving. It is a fun outdoor activity that grows a child’s confidence and teaches valuable surf awareness skills. Our aim is to provide a safe, family-friendly and fun environment for our Nippers. Kids living on the coast should be equipped with the best skills and knowledge for safe use of Australian beaches. Our Nippers today are the next generation of Surf Lifesavers.

***We have now closed membership registrations and will not be accepting any more nippers for the 2023/2024 season*

Swimming EVALUATION

In order for children to participate in Nippers, they must possess the necessary swimming abilities applicable to their age group as per SLSQ.
SLSQ has developed a Junior Preliminary Skills Evaluation for each age group.
Every child must pass their evaluation before they can commence Nippers or participate in any other Junior Activities event.

Your child’s swim abilities can be assessed one of our pool proficiency days (TBA) or you can print a preliminary evaluation form (yellow highlighted box below RHS) and have a private accredited assessor evaluate your child (at your cost).

Nippers Handbook

The Nippers Handbook provides more information about our Nippers program including what to expect throughout the season.

We encourage all parents to familiarise themselves with this resource.

How you can get involved with your child and the nippers program, learn the skills to save a life, create lasting bonds with your family and the lifesaving community.

WATER SAFTEYFor nippers to run in the Surf, we need at least one water safety to 5 nippers to ensure their safety. On Sunday, nippers for water safety can use a range of equipment (board/tubes) to help with running activities and teach nippers struggling with the extra skills they need. They provide support and encouragement for all nippers as well as helping to run different activities of the nipper rotational roster. To become Water Safety you must be at least 14 years of age and obtain your Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) or Bronze Medallion.

AGE MANAGERS – Age Managers are vital for our nipper program to run. Typically there are at least 2 main age managers per age group guiding the nippers through programs, new skills and extra camps/carnivals. Age managers are important mentors, helping to build strong family-like bonds within age groups over many seasons. To become and Age Manager you must complete the simple Age Managers course on your members portal and contact the admin office.                                                                                                            *You must be at least 18years of age if you are wanting to work with U6’s & U7’s age groups or 15years of age for all other age groups*

OFFICIALOfficials are the backbone of competitions, there is a large variety of officials within this category. If you are new to joining officiating you will most likely become a general official (in surf sport – board, swim, iron) who help with counting placing’s at the end of a race, marshalling competitors, monitoring fair play and organising courses. From here there is a wide variety of pathways to becoming a starter of going into more specialized surf sports. You are incredibly important as our Nippers cannot compete at carnivals unless we provide a set number of officials per competitors. To become an official you must undertake an officials course, please contact the admin office if you are interested.

There are more ways to assist if you would like to register your interest below and the office will contact you to find out what best suits you.

All parents wishing to participate in Nippers supporting roles MUST hold a current Working with Children’s BlueCard and complete the online training modules (SLSQ CYRMS INDUCTION & SLS CHILDREN SAFE AWARENESS COURSE).

Be sure to apply for this prior to signing up for a course via the reception office.
