What paperwork do I need to complete for my child to join Nippers?

All membership enrolments and payments must be completed online (for both new members and renewing members) prior to attending any Nipper activities.  Please follow the instructions and links on the ‘How to Join’ page under Nippers on the Noosa Heads Surf Club website.  (Link to ‘how to join’ page)

Why do parents/guardians/caregivers need to become members?

This is a requirement of membership of the Noosa Heads Junior Activities program. This ensures there is a parent/guardian is on the beach at all times during Nipper Sundays. If you have 1 Nipper = 1 Parent must be a Member; 2 Nippers = 2 Parents must be members.

How old does my child have to be to join Nippers?

The minimum age for a child to start Nippers is 5 years of age.  Your child must have turned 5 on or before the 30th September of the year of starting (they will be in the U6 age group – e.g. DOB between 1 October 2018 – 30 September 2019).

My child can’t swim very well, is Nippers a good place for them to learn?

No, Nippers is not a learn-to-swim organisation. Your child needs some reasonable swimming skills to be able to take part in Nippers each week.  We recommend that you enrol your child in a swim school to learn basic swimming skills prior to joining Nippers.

My child wants to be in the same age group as his/her friends, but they are born before 30 September and he/she is born after 30 September, can they move groups?

No.  Age Groups are set by our governing body Surf Lifesaving Australia and for insurance purposes your child cannot be changed into another group.

My child is a current Nipper, do they still need to complete the pool and run/swim/run competency?

Yes.  Each year every child must complete the relevant proficiencies to their age group to participate in the program.  An additional competency is required if your child wishes to compete at carnivals and will be run on the first Nipper Sunday of the season (under 8 to under 14 age groups only).

What does Nippers involve?

Each Sunday morning from 8.00am to 10.00am between October and March, Nippers learn the skills necessary to handle themselves in the surf.

The aims of the Sunday activities are:
* Instruction in surf safety & surf awareness
* Enjoyable social activity for children & parents
* Lifesaving & first aid skill development

Mid-week training sessions in swim and board skills are available to participants in the U8 – U14 age groups and beach competition training is available to the U11 – U14 age groups.

What is included in membership fees?

Family membership includes:
– Participation for your child in approximately 16 Nipper Sunday sessions
– Minimum of 2 additional training sessions (U8-U14 age groups) per week
– Access to subsidy for swim squad (U8 – U14 age groups)
– Access to subsidy for board purchases (U11 – U14 age groups)
– All carnival entry fees for your child/children
– Blue Card processing for both parents/guardians
– Discount off purchases at the NHSLSC Supporters Club bar and restaurant

Can I drop my child at Nippers and leave the beach and come back at the end to pick them up?

NO!.  It is a requirement of participation in the program that a parent or caregiver is on the beach AT ALL TIMES while their child is signed on at Nippers. It is an expectation that parents get involved in helping at Nippers each week, whether it is as a water safety officer, helping set up or cook the BBQ or assisting with beach set up/pack down.  Without parent helpers Nippers cannot run.

My Child’s Grandparent, Nanny or other caregiver will sometimes bring them down to Nippers do they have to join?

Yes, they should be members to attend any club related activities.  If you are a single parent family you can join up a grandparent, nanny or other caregiver as part of your family membership at no additional charge (family membership structure includes up to 2 parents/guardians/caregivers).  If you wish to sign up an additional (i.e. third) adult family member or carer this will be at an additional cost.

Each child will require a high viz rash vest (provided free as part of the membership) and a coloured tie down cap (age groups are assigned specific colours at a cost of $20) to participate at Nipper Sunday’s and a competition cap for carnivals.  It is not compulsory at Nipper Sunday’s to wear club swimwear, however we do have swimwear for sale if you wish to purchase.  Equipment required for Nippers Sunday’s, training sessions and carnivals will be supplied by the club, unless you are in the U11 – U14 age groups and have been approved for a board subsidy – then you will use your own board for all club related activities.

When is the uniform shop open?

The uniform shop operates at the Noosa Main Beach location only.  During the Nipper season the shop is open from 7:30 – 9:30am on Sunday mornings.  Uniforms will also be for sale at our pool proficiency swim days in August & September.

Does my child have to compete at carnivals to join Nippers?

No, Nippers is all about teaching water safety skills in open water and producing lifesavers of the future.  While competition is an important tool in this process, and the Club encourages Nippers to take part, it is not compulsory.

Does Nippers run every Sunday?

There will be times throughout the season where Nipper Sunday sessions will not run or will be cancelled.  Cancellations are unfortunate, however sessions will not run when the beaches have been closed or if rough conditions are forecast.  For all other weekends where a Nipper Sunday session will not be run, dates will be advised as early as possible in the season on the Nipper calendar. Notification will be sent via Team App, Facebook, SurfGuard and on the Noticeboard.
