It is now 75 years since men of Cooroy Tewantin District first set foot on the beach at Noosa Heads. Their purpose for being there was the Nobelist cause known to mankind – the protection of human life and there organisation The Cooroy Royal Life Saving and Surf Club. In those early years money and equipment was at a minimum and transportation to the beach was by whatever means available. But through it all they persisted and the club survived except for a short period during world war 2 when most able bodied men answered their countries call to arms.
Because of it’s distance from major towns the majority of members were country boys from small business houses and farms in the nearby communities. There only equipment at that time being the reel line and belt and a handful of good mates.
As the years went by memberships fluctuated through highs and lows and eventually a club house was built, and down through the years extended. Through it all and despite their isolation and lack of big name competitors men and women took pride in the fact that they were Noosa.
During the years there have been occasions when members performed above and beyond the call of duty, thus adding to our pride and tradition. So today we stand before our peers in lifesaving and the local community knowing that down through the years no lives have been lost on the Noosa Beach while members have been on patrol.
But in todays environment members changing clubs has become common practice and so to remain solid we must maintain a feeling of a family environment and mate ship, so that club loyalty becomes our Glory.
So, to our foundation, past and present members, I say thank you one and all, you have made us very proud and I call on the present and future members to remember with pride your clubs history and tradition so that you also may look back and say “No lives have been lost on the Noosa Beach while members have been on patrol.”
